One Rockful At a Time
Orange County Sanitation District (OCSD) removed over 20,000 tons of large rocks along the flowing Santa Ana River that were placed under emergency permits to protect the original Santa Ana River Interceptor (SARI) pipeline from erosion. The rocks were removed from the river, between Green River Golf Club and Savi Ranch Shopping Center. A new 4-mile section of pipe was constructed outside of the riverbed in 2015, eliminating the need for the rocks. They now have to go due to permit requirements, since the rocks no longer serve a purpose. The rocks are taken to a staging area where they are loaded and weighed on trucks before hauling. And just like that, they’re gone.

Disclaimer: No species of special interest were threatened, endangered, or harmed in the rock removal of this project. Project activities were scheduled during the non-nesting season. An onsite biologist provided assistance in the field to assure that biological resources were protected and mitigation measures implemented for activities near sensitive habitat.
